NOVEMBER 2024

Congratulations to Jonathan – now a Knight of Honour!
On October 12 2024, our Board member, Jonathan Agius, along with 11 other Aspirants were formally admitted into the Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller – Australasia (Priory of NSW)
The order dates as far back as the early 11th Century and is the oldest surviving International Christian Order of Chivalry.
The Order had at first been a charitable group, which cared for the Christian Pilgrims who came to visit the Holy Places. The traditional date of the inauguration of the Hospice of St John in Jerusalem was in 1048, with the Order being founded on Augustinian Rules around the year 1087 under the first Grand Prior, Brother Gerard of Amalfi.
The Knights Hospitallers have a very interesting and intriguing history, building churches, hospitals and caring for the sick, poor and those in need all around the world and this work continues today in many forms across many continents. Upholding traditional values and beliefs.
Jonathan said “It is very humbling to have been chosen to join the Order and I look forward to carrying the values of the Order through my own connections with community and charities”. Jonathan is now a Knight of Honour (Chevalier Jonathan).

GambleAware Week 2024 has wrapped up

Thank you to all those who supported GambleAware Week 2024. The theme for this year was Safer Gambling. Are you onboard? with a focus on showcasing safer gambling strategies.

New research on gambling and alcohol use among Australians

New research led by the Australian Gambling Research Centre at the Australian Institute of Family Studies investigated the harms and predictors of consuming gambling and alcohol at the same time in young Australians (aged 16–35 years). The ‘Bets ’n’ Booze study’ undertook an online survey of people who had gambled in the past year, and interviewed people who reported drinking while gambling.

The research found that half of participants consumed alcohol when gambling. It found that licensed venues created an environment where gambling and alcohol were enjoyed together and that young adults frequently consumed alcohol and gambled together for social reasons.

The research found that people who started gambling when underage were at a higher risk of experiencing gambling harm as an adult than those who started gambling when they were of legal age. The same was true for those who started drinking while underage.

The research highlights the need for targeted awareness and education on the co-consumption of gambling and alcohol and possible related harms. It can be used to inform public health policies aimed at reducing gambling and alcohol harm.

Child Protection Week – 1 to 7 September 2024.
This year National Child Protection Week continued to champion the message ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’.
This message captured the essence of National Child Protection Week which aims to promote a safe and supported life for every child, now and into the future.
In 2024, the message that ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’ was complemented with the theme ‘Every conversation matters’.
Conversations are powerful tools to keep children and young people safe and well. We know change happens when we start talking, when we share our challenges, and when we work together to find solutions.

Social Infrastructure: Investing into the Neighbourhood and Community Centres of NSW

APRIL 2024
Pre-Budget Submission 2024-2025

Local Community Services Association (LCSA) is the peak body and membership organisation for Neighbourhood and Community Centres (NCCs) in NSW. Our purpose is to represent the interests of our diverse place-based, locally-governed member organisations with a particular emphasis on community development.

Our network of 175 NCCs are the largest community-led infrastructure network in NSW. NCCs are uniquely placed to know and respond to the needs and aspirations of their communities. They facilitate community development projects, coordinate service delivery, and they are an integral part of frontline responses to, and recovery from, natural disasters. NCCs are recognised as service providers in a diverse community services sector.

This Pre-Budget Submission follows consultations with LCSA’s membership about policy priorities. Most of these recommendations have been canvassed extensively with NSW Parliamentarians over the past year. The Parliamentary Friends of Neighbourhood Centres Group formed in February 2024 to support NCCs and LCSA’s call for core funding to enable the social infrastructure of NCCs across NSW
