The ‘Safer gambling, stronger communities’, campaign encourages Aboriginal people and communities to reflect on their gambling and promotes safer gambling strategies. The campaign’s goal is to start conversations about gambling and its risks. It features three animations developed by young Aboriginal filmmakers from the Aboriginal Animation Training & Promotion Program at the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, University of Technology Sydney. They created stick puppet animations to bring a unique storytelling perspective to the campaign.
Why we need a campaign
The NSW Gambling Survey 2024 found over 10% of Aboriginal people experience at-risk gambling, compared to 3.8% of other NSW residents. Despite representing only 3.3% of the NSW population, Aboriginal people experience 8.2% of gambling harm and 8.6% of the harm caused by other peoples’ gambling. This campaign aims to address this by encouraging people and communities to reflect on their gambling and the gambling of those around them.
